Map shaft geometry from end to end

Record stepped diameters, shoulders, bearing positions, threads, center features, and overall length in their drawing order. This provides the basis for discussing workholding, turning passes, and part support.

Call out non-round features

Keyways, flats, slots, cross holes, and tapped features should be listed with their location and tolerance requirements. They are often the deciding factors in whether milling or live-tool operations need to be considered.

Align the inquiry with assembly needs

State the dimensions or surfaces that interface with bearings, couplings, rotors, or housings, along with the planned inspection method. This keeps the technical conversation tied to the part’s actual fit requirements.
